About this group
Why 'online academic publishing', and why 'editors'?
In very recent years, software systems for online publishing have diversified and become more powerful. Many individuals, research organisations and publishers are trying to use these systems to create new online publishing platforms and new publications. Too many!
The number of viable, almost viable, and stagnant publishing projects has overtaken the capacity of authors to provide articles, and the capacity of would-be publishers to find editors, translators, reviewers and so on to support their publications.
An era of experimentation, or trial and error has started. Not all online publishers and publications will last for long. By study all kinds of effort, successful or not, there should be much to learn about the ingredients needed for successful online publishing, and the criteria that can be used to recognise success.
The need for a specialist group
To identify and support online publishers and online publications, a specialist group with broad previous experience is needed to:
(1) identify publishers and publications that have good potential, in diverse subject areas, and (2) monitor and report on their progress.
Editors of various kinds are key to the success of almost all academic publications, and one aim of our group may be to help mediate connections between publishers and editors. Other roles may be to provide independent general advice, and perhaps to develop a formal advisory or consultancy role.
If and how these kinds of role can be developed are of course matters that need to be discussed during our presentdevelopment phase.
First phase of development
During our first phase of development (June 2009 - May 2010) membership of this group will be limited to 20 members.
Members may be based in any country, may specialise in any subjects, and may use any working languages in addition to English (the working language of this site). We invite applications to join from professional researchers, editors, proofreaders, translators, illustrators, language service companies, researchers, and publishers.
